Abstract

This paper discusses some design considerations for ATM switch implementation of the ABR service flow control procedure, which uses a closed feed back loop control mechanism. An ATM switch implementation that uses an unique explicit rate flow control algorithm is presented. The model described achieves maximum network stability in terms of source rate and switch buffer occupancy oscillations. It uses a congestion avoidance technique based on bandwidth demand to control the source rate. As a result, link utilization is always kept to a maximum while the switch buffer size is close to zero.
